Unauthorised transactions are activities that occur on your financial account without your permission or knowledge. These transactions can involve the use of Credit / Debit Cards, online banking accounts, mobile wallets and other electronic payment methods.
Unauthorised transactions are typically carried out by fraudulent people who want to steal sensitive information or money.

How can unauthorised transactions take place?

  • Credit / Debit Card fraud: This can happen when a Credit or Debit Card is issued in your name without your knowledge, or when it is used for making purchases, withdrawals or transfers without your knowledge.
  • Online banking frauds: It can happen when your NetBanking or mobile banking credentials are compromised or leaked. It can lead to quick transfers to different accounts without your consent.
  • Mobile wallet frauds: Mobile wallet frauds happen when the credentials of your mobile wallet are compromised. Fraudulent UPI transactions are also a type of mobile wallet fraud.
  • ATM skimming: This happens when the fraudsters attach devices like cameras or skimmers in an ATM. It allows them to record your card details and PIN. This can then be used to make online transactions using your card details.

How to report unauthorised transactions to HDFC Bank?

1) Block your Credit / Debit Card through NetBanking:

  • Login to your NetBanking account using the customer ID and password.
  • Click on the 'Card' tab.
  • Select the 'Request' button under the Credit or Debit Card.
  • Select the 'Credit Card Hotlisting' or 'Debit Card Hotlisting' option.

2) Report unauthorised transactions through PhoneBanking

  • For PayZapp, Profile > Help Centre > Select a transaction > Tap on ‘?’ sign > Raise a Ticket.
  • To report Credit Card / Debit Card / NetBanking / UPI transactions not done by you, call 1800-258-6161.

How to protect yourself from unauthorised transactions?

  • Use strong, unique passwords for your banking accounts.

  • Keep your devices' operating systems and applications up to date.
  • Change your PINs and passwords periodically.
  • Avoid sharing sensitive details over phone calls or emails.
